How to Talk About Books You Haven?t Read

Published two years ago in French, and now widely circulated in other languages, the book “How to Talk About Books You Haven’t Read” will definitely be my Christmas break reading material. It is written by a Paris university literature professor, Pierre Bayard. Judging from reviews I have come across so far, this is going to be a funny and witty reading session.

The book is supposedly a satirical one. Prof. Bayard is also a psychoanalyst and is fascinated by the fact that many do feel guilty about being non-readers. While one might get the impression that this book suggests that you really don’t need to read books and that it is enough to pretend to have read such and such book, the aim was actually the other way around.

Anyways, as I’m trying to improve further my Swedish, I will try to read this in Swedish. But then again, it is perhaps enough that I just talk about the book without actually reading it? But there lies the distinction between readers who read books for pleasure and those who do so because of social pressure. And I am glad that I belong to the former!
