For women in science!
Did you know that of the 192 Nobel laureates in Medicine awarded between 1901 and 2008, only 8 were women? The Physics category has the worst record in terms of men/women ratio with only 2 women out of 184 laureates!
That’s why I’m particularly happy about this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine where two of the awardees are women:
In Prof. Blackburn’s telephone interview right after informing her of the award, she said “You want women to have access to science because it ‘s such a wonderful thing to do.”
Indeed. Thus I say, “Go girl!”
Call me old-fashioned, if you will, but I still prefer achievement over gender. (couldn’t use word ‘sex’ there 🙂
@Smek: Sure, achievements shouldn’t be based on gender. The issue is why women in science have been under-represented all these times? My opinion is given the same oppurtunity and equal domestic responsibilities, women are capable of achieving as much as men. Take for example the case of child-rearing. If men would take half the time of taking care of his child, his wife would need not jeopardize her own career. This set up is slowly happening in Sweden, and perhaps in all scandinavian countries, where many men do actually take half of the parental leave so the wife doesn’t need to be away from work for too long time.
