A Picture To Convince You

Some estimates the difference between the human and chimp genomes to be only 2.7%. When I mention this to my undergraduate genomics class every fall semester, I always show this picture on one of my teaching slides.

Boy, ’twas not so difficult to convince them.

Some of my students would even expound on to say that the similarities between the pictured specimens are not only physical.

I made a post of my own, based on your slide. If you put there Obama’s picture, would it be considered as a racial insult instead? Because the black were thought to be closer to apes, a long time ago? The race seems to come first, then intelligence. It’s not right and I like Obama, but my thoughts are usually one step beyond… to the PI side, alas. Sorry! Then again, I have no excuses to defend GB jr 🙂

Good point! But as it stands now, it is actually an insult to the chimp to be placed beside that representative of the human species. I could have put a picture of Ahmajinedad there or Mugabe’s and it wouldn’t have made a big difference. The point being poking fun at shady characters of current events. As Obama has not done any shady stuff (so far) or at least insofar as I know, I wouldn’t poke fun at his persona. So it is not the race of the person that is the point of contention here but his deeds.

Ok, I get it. Poor chimp, ha-ha! But my point deep down was that with whites in question as a target it’s not a racial issue like you mentioned, but with other races it easily is. If I criticized Obama (which I don’t), someone would say I’m a racist (which I am not). Then again, the reason why whites may not consider it as a racial issue could be that they think they are the finest race and therefore it couldn’t be a racial issue. A total impossibility. Because no-one could mock a white. This may be one of my stupid theories once again, a refreshing one I hope, and it might require more than just my opinion to have any sort of importance. Someone should write a book about it. Someone may already have!

I understand your point. Next time, I’m going to ask my students, who are mostly international students, whether they’d find the picture racist if I use a non-white person there.

Even before the pictures loads, I knew Bush would be here!
